The primary goal of speech therapy is to helps to improve speech, language and communication skills as well as their ability to swallow.

Speech language pathologists (SLP's) also known as speech therapists are the clinical experts in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of speech, language and communication disorders in children and adults.

What does speech therapist do?

When to consult a speech therapist?

If you observe these warning signs you may need to meet a speech therapist for a comprehensive evaluation

  • Struggle with imitation of gestures and sounds.
  • Slow to show an understanding of new words.
  • Often frustrated as they can’t yet say what they wants.
  • Has difficulty communicating their basic needs.
  • Not combining words by 18months of age and sentences by 36 months of age.
  • Not responding to name call ,directions and conversation with others.
  • They have a hard time playing with or talking to other children.
  • Unintelligible speech After 24 months, and always difficult to be understood by familiar people.
  • Child stop saying word he or she had previously mastered

Hearing impairment - Auditory verbal therapy is a specialised approach to support children with hearing lose in developing spoken language skills

Speech sound disorders - Also known as Articulation phonological disorders, these are communication disorders that affect the ability to produce and produce perceive speech sounds clearly

Stuttering and fluency disorders - Fluency disorders the course Problems with the flow, rhythm and Speed of speech. There are two main types, stuttering ,characterised by repetition prolongation blocks or pauses and cluttering which is characterised by rapid rate of speech

Cleft lip and palate - These are birth defects that occur when a baby sleep or palate do not form properly. May have problems with articulation, feeding, hearing and teeth development

Voice disorders - Children may be diagnosed with a voice disorder because of an organic or functional aetiologies

Down syndrome - Also known as trisomy 21, causes mild to significant physical and developmental problems

Selective mutism - It is a complex childhood anxiety disorder characterised by a child’s in ability to speech or communicate effectively in selected social settings

Learning disability - These are disorders that affect the ability to understand or use spoken or written language , do mathematical calculation, coordinate movements or direct attention
